Where Do We Go? — A Community Documentary Project About Olympia, Survival, and Human Dignity

In Olympia, Washington, there are people quietly working every week to help feed, support, and care for members of the community who are struggling to survive. Many of these efforts happen outside the spotlight, powered almost entirely by volunteers, donations, and people who simply refuse to look away.

“Where Do We Go?” is an ongoing documentary project focused on telling those stories.

The project began while documenting the work of organizations and volunteers helping provide meals, supplies, and support for unhoused and vulnerable people throughout the Olympia area. What started as event coverage and community storytelling quickly evolved into something much larger — an effort to capture the real human experiences surrounding homelessness, poverty, addiction, mutual aid, and survival in Thurston County.

Rather than focusing only on statistics or political talking points, the documentary aims to explore the personal realities behind these issues: Where do people go when they lose housing? What happens when existing systems fail? Who steps in to help? What does community support actually look like on the ground? And how do people maintain dignity and hope while navigating incredibly difficult circumstances?

Part of the filming has followed the work being done by the Food Source Foundation and EGYHOP Sunday Soupers, groups helping provide free meals and support throughout the community.

During one outreach effort documented for the project, volunteers distributed food to hundreds of people across Olympia. These gatherings are about far more than meals — they create moments of connection, visibility, and humanity for people who are often ignored.

The documentary also examines the broader community response, including local businesses, activists, outreach workers, artists, volunteers, and residents attempting to navigate the growing challenges facing the region.

“Where Do We Go?” is not intended to provide simplistic answers. Instead, the goal is to create honest, compassionate storytelling that encourages viewers to better understand the realities many members of the community face every day.

As production continues, additional interviews, outreach events, and community perspectives will be added to the project.

If you are involved in outreach work, community support efforts, or have a story connected to these issues and would like to participate, collaboration inquiries are welcome.

Community storytelling matters because every person deserves to be seen, heard, and remembered.
